

In the past, Mont-Laurier was known as "Rapide-de-l'Orignal", a reference to a legend that recounts how a hunted moose made a huge leap across the Du Lièvre River to escape his trackers. The municipality's current name rather refers to Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. This politician was responsible for the creation of Alberta and Saskatchewan, thanks to the expansion of the railway to Western Canada, but also for its arrival in the Laurentians as far as Rapide-de-l'Orignal!
